Case Study – IMF

Case Study – IMF

Back in 2007, Applied Relevance hung out a shingle as a consulting firm specializing in enterprise search professional services.   We figured 10 years implementing enterprise search and taxonomy projects for some of the most prestigious companies in the world gave us the street cred to solve some pretty big problems.  And so it did.   We landed projects for organizations like Businessweek, Conde Nast, MPS Group, and Jane’s Defence Publishing in our first year of existence.

But  AR was most fortunate in those days to be invited to provide professional services for the International Monetary Fund. This is a prestigious institution, and we were honored to have the opportunity to work with some of the smartest people, quite literally,  from all over the world.

Not every organization has the foresight to understand the importance of enterprise search and particularly the  role of taxonomies in organizing and finding documents.   IMF gets it.   They understand that timely and accurate access to critical enterprise documents is fundamental to the success of the organization – now more than ever.

Over time, it became clear that IMF needed a new search engine – preferably one that can support taxonomies.   The problem is, not very many search engines support taxonomies.   And those that do don’t really take them seriously.   On the other side of the coin, not many taxonomy and ontology management system treat enterprise search that seriously.   What they really needed was a way to combine powerful taxonomy management and automatic tagging with a fast, scalable search engine.

FAST Search and Transfer – more than a recursive acronym

Right around the time that Microsoft acquired the Norwegian company FAST Search and Transfer, the IMF began evaluating candidates for a new enterprise search and taxonomy system to power their “Knowledge Exchange” project.  FAST was the natural choice.   It is mature and powerful, and was soon to be incorporated deeply into SharePoint 2010.   IMF happened to be moving toward SharePoint as well, and had lots of in-house Microsoft expertise.   An in-depth evaluation led to the conclusion that FAST was the way to go.

Why Applied Relevance?

As I mentioned before, IMF are very keen on enterprise taxonomies.  They understood how they can be leveraged to help users find and navigate to the information they need.  While there are some good enterprise search and taxonomy systems out there, none of them really had the mix of features that they wanted or needed.   Plus, AR had already developed a version of the taxonomy manager and auto-tagger for SharePoint 2007 to IMF specifications to support their legacy system.  And it worked.

So, we ported AR·Semantics to SharePoint 2010 and FAST for SharePoint, and in the process did a lot of rewriting and streamlining of the code to make it truly enterprise ready.   The result is AR·Semantics for SharePoint, the IMF Knowledge Exchange, and this very nice case study from Microsoft.

Needless to say, we’re very grateful to IMF, and especially the Knowledge Engineering team for their vision, patience and support as AR grows and deploys our solutions to an ever growing list of organizations that understand the power of taxonomy and search.

Applied Relevance to Exhibit at Online Information 2011 in London

Applied Relevance will be presenting and exhibiting at the XML Pavilion of the London Online conference at the 29-November – 2-December at National Hall, Olympia, London.

The theme our exhibit is “Agile Taxonomies for Agile Publishing”.  We are partnering with Really Strategies, iFactory and MarkLogic in sponsoring the event.

MarkLogic server excels at handling unstructured data.   AR·Semantics builds on that to provide taxonomy management, auto-tagging of content and hierarchical faceted navigation.  AR·Semantics has three modules for three kinds of users.

AR·Taxonomy Manager is for knowledge experts and content curators.   It is an easy-to-use interface for creating, managing and testing rule-based taxonomies.

AR·Annotator is for content owners and authors.  It automatically adds metadata (tags) to documents as they are added to MarkLogic Server.

AR·Navigator is for end users.   It is a set of faceted search controls that let end users zero-in on the content they need.

We’ll have some exciting new announcements at the show, as well as  a compelling presentation at the speakers’ pavilion.

Tuesday, 29 November, 14:30 – 15:00 intheatre 4 (EPublishing Solutions)-

‘Agile taxonomies for e-publication’George Everitt, Chief Architect and CEO, Applied Relevance.

We hope to see you there!

Applied Relevance Launches Semantic Software for MarkLogic Server

Posted by on May 8, 2011 in Highlight, Releases | Comments Off

AR·Semantics is an easy-to-use taxonomy management and categorization service for MarkLogic Server

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — May 6, 2011 — Applied Relevance today introduced AR·Semantics for MarkLogic Server, the next generation of its software suite for managing taxonomies, classifying documents, faceted search and directed navigation. AR·Semantics features a functional user interface for building and managing hierarchical data models for unstructured information.  AR·Semantics for MarkLogic Server takes advantage of the big data handling capabilities of MarkLogic Server to enable near-real-time categorization of enterprise content.
“We’re very excited about this integration with MarkLogic,” said George Everitt, CEO, Applied Relevance. “MarkLogic Server is solid, scalable, and shockingly powerful. Our testing has shown that it can handle truly massive unstructured data with much less bother than similarly scaled relational databases. AR·Semantics for MarkLogic Server enables companies to organize their unstructured information, ultimately allowing them to generate value from it.”
The human brain thinks of the world as taxonomies, or hierarchies of information. Taxonomies allow organizations to classify and categorize information in a natural way. When taxonomies are applied to unstructured information, new and intuitive ways to drill into that information are unlocked, allowing enterprises to get to what they need faster. Applied Relevance semantic software unleashes the power of taxonomies on masses of unstructured and semi-structured information.
“Leveraging unstructured information and big data is a place where MarkLogic excels,” said Bill Veiga, vice president of business development, MarkLogic. “As a database for unstructured information, using MarkLogic Server for the AR·Semantics platform was a natural fit. Implementing a platform that can enable near real-time categorization of enterprise content can offer organizations a competitive advantage and can have a significant impact on the bottom line.”
AR·Semantics for MarkLogic Server is available today and more information can be found athttp://www.appliedrelevance.com/marklogic/. To learn more about MarkLogic, please visit the company’s website.
